Don't stop with FIR, says Elangovan

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI July 4. The Tamil Nadu Congress preisdent, E.V.K.S. Elangovan, today urged the Government not to stop with the filing of a First Information Report against the MDMK general secretary, Vaiko, for his pro-LTTE speeches; it should arrest and subject him to the due process of the law, he told reporters here.

Everyone in the State was aware that Mr.Vaiko spoke in glowing terms of the LTTE, even at marriage functions. Still ``why was not action taken against him earlier, after the LTTE was proscribed?''

Asked whether similar action should be taken against others supporting the LTTE, Mr. Elangovan said no one was as open as Mr.Vaiko in his support to the banned organisation. ``But if there are leaders who support the LTTE to the same extent, action should be taken against them also.''

Referring to the DK general secretary, K.Veeramani, Mr. Elangovan said he was not only supporting the LTTE but had also proclaimed that armed training would be imparted to youth. ``He should also be arrested. But since he is a yes-man of (the Chief Minister) Jayalalithaa, he will not be arrested.''

'Pro-LTTE speeches not unlawful'

Meanwhile, Mr. Veeramani said speeches in support of the LTTE could not be construed as unlawful. Action could be taken only if there was instigation of violence in the speeches. Mr. Vaiko, in his statement, made it clear that he had never instigated violence, the DK leader pointed out.

The AIADMK Government should concentrate on development works and fulfil its promises to the people.

Any action against Mr. Vaiko would lead to unnecessary controversies and turn out to be counter-productive, he said in a statement.
