Chennai-Vizag Express flagged off

CHENNAI July 4. The Railway Ministry will soon negotiate with the Tamil Nadu Government to get concessional power tariff for electrified railway lines in the State, said the Minister of State for Railways, A.K.Moorthy, here today. Flagging off the inaugural run of the Chennai Central— Visakhapatnam (weekly) Express here today, the Minister said the Railways could take up more electrification projects in the State if concessional power tariff was offered. He said Kerala offered lower power tariff to the Southern Railway. The Minister, who was on his first visit to the State after taking charge, said he would necessary steps for expediting the ongoing projects in the State.

The General Manager, V.Anand, said the passenger index of Southern Railway was on the rise. In the last financial year, passenger traffic recorded 465 millions. To meet additional demand, the zone operated about 1,000 special trains last summer.

The Deputy Mayor of Chennai Corporation, R.Thiagarajan, and the PMK president, G.K.Mani, demanded additional trains to various towns.
