According to the AICC secretary in-charge of Tamil Nadu, Ramesh Chennithala, the date of the merger had to be postponed, as the Leader of the Opposition and Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, would have to be in the capital on August 12 should there be a contest for the post of Vice-President. But for the change in date, the schedule remains the same as had been announced before. In the morning, Ms. Gandhi will fly to Pondicherry to preside over the merger of the PMC with the Congress. And, later in the day, she will travel to Madurai for the return of the TMC to the Congress fold after it broke away from the party six years ago.
