Golf
Kapur endured eight rounds of golf at four different courses and came out with an under-par aggregate. The U.S.-based Kapur, had an aggregate of 19-under 557, at the end of the eighth and final round, at the DLF Golf and Country Club in Gurgaon. The trials were conducted at Jaypee Greens (Greater Noida), Classic Golf Resort, Golden Greens and the DLF course. Kapur will again be India's mainstay at the prestigious Eisenhower Cup World championship. The Indian Golf Union (IGU) is sending a three-member team comprising Kapur, Mishra and Manav Das, to the World championship. With the greens at DLF course playing `very slow', most of the players struggled to cope with it. There were just three under-par scores in the two rounds played by nine golfers. On Wednesday, Gurbaz Mann came up with a 69, the best card at DLF. Still, no one could touch Kapur as his groundwork done in earlier rounds, particularly at the Jaypee Greens and at the Classic course, stood him in good stead. Moreover, the slowness of the greens cost Harinder Gupta a possible place in the World championship team. Harinder was placed second behind Kapur after six rounds, but rounds of 75 and 79 at DLF did him in. For Harinder, who finished the 2001-02 season as number one junior in the country, making it to the Asian Games team in only his first year as senior is a commendable achievement. The others who made it to the Asian Games team, Mishra and Manav Das, had been knocking the doors for quite some time. Both had teamed well to lead India to a fourth successive title win in the SAARC golf championship, at the Classic Golf Resort. The teams were selected by the IGU Selection Committee, which met this evening. The Committee comprised Surjeet Singh Duggal, Gangesh Khaitan, Laxman Singh, Rohit Amit, Shant Kumar and Satish Aparajit. The scores (after 144 holes): Shiv Kapur (68, 64, 72, 66, 76, 69, 70, 72) 557; Keshav Mishra (73, 73, 70, 71, 73, 76, 72, 75) 583; Manav Das (75, 76, 72, 69, 76, 71, 75, 72) 586; Harinder Gupta (73, 77, 67, 71, 78, 69, 75, 79) 589; Gurbaz Mann (78, 75, 75, 79, 70, 74, 69, 73) 593; Vikrant Chopra (79, 77, 76, 70, 75, 78, 72, 75) 602; Gagan Verma (76, 76, 74, 77, 78, 78, 70, 80) 609; Simarjeet Singh (75, 76, 78, 67, 79, 74, 81, 81) 611; Jasjeet Singh (80, 72, 79, 76, 75, 80, 76, 87) 625.
