Canada dethrones India

KOCHI JULY 4. Canada dethroned four-time champion India at the fifth World cycle polo championship in Paris. Canada won the seven-team league event while host France-A finished runner-up.

India, which fielded two teams, took the next two positions with its `A' team picking the bronze medal. India-A, which won four matches by huge margins, lost to France-A 4-11 and drew with Canada 10-10 in its last league match and finished with 15 points.

Both Canada and France-A ended with 16 points each but the former had a superior goal difference.

A few members of the Indian team, including the captain P. Siva Kumar, reached Kochi this morning and were given a small reception at the railway station by the Mayor, Mr Dinesh Mani and the Kerala Sports Council vice-president Mr E.S. Jose.

Final placings: 1. Canada (16 pts, + 68 goal difference), 2. France-A (16 pts, goal difference + 45), 3. India-A (15 pts), 4. India-B (13 pts), 5. France-B (10 pts), 6. England-A (8 pts), 7. England-B (6 pts).

The results (seven-team league, 3 points for a win, 2 for draw and 1 for loss): India-A drew with Canada 10-10, France-A bt India-A 11-4, India-A bt England-A 27-3, India-A bt England-B 29-0, India-A bt India-B 17-5, India-A bt France-B 17-1, India-B drew with France-A 8-8, India-B bt England-B 31-2, India-B bt France-B 15-4, India-B bt England-A 18-0, Canada bt India-B 10-5, Canada bt England-B 40-0, Canada drew with France-A 7-7, Canada bt France-B 13-6, Canada bt England-A 16-0, France-A bt England-A 12-4, France-A bt England-B 20-0, France-A bt France-B 11-1, France-B bt England-B 19-0; France-B bt England-A 9-1, England-A bt England-B 10-0. — Our Sports Reporter
