Desai Bros buys Mother's Recipe

MUMBAI JULY 4. A Pune-based bidi manufacturing company has acquired the branded food processing unit `Mother's Recipe', as part of its plans to diversify and get into the ethnic food business.

The 100-year-old Desai Brothers has earmarked an investment of Rs. 100 crores for the development of the ethnic food business over the next three years, Sanjay Desai, Executive Director, said here today.

The Mother's Recipe brand has a wide network of 300 distributors, 35,000 wholesalers and over 2.5 lakh retail outlets across India. It has about 24 regional speciality pickles with different authentic regional tastes.

Desai Brothers is likely to launch a new range of regional speciality pickles along with value addition to the existing products under the Mother's Recipe brand, Mr. Desai said.

Pickles has a market of Rs. 1,500 crore in India of which about 60 per cent is contributed by the unorganised sector, mainly local manufacturers, he said.
