As per the order issued under the Jute Packaging Materials (Compulsory use in Packing Commodities) Act of 1987, the entire foodgrains and 90 per cent of sugar had to be mandatorily packed in jute bags. The order expired on June 30. Incidentally, the court stay followed a petition filed by the Indian Jute Manufacturers Association against the recommendations of a three-member inter-Ministerial committee for progressive dilution of the compulsory packaging norms for foodgrains and sugar. The next hearing in the case has been fixed for July 19.
