Statue damaged

By Hasan Suroor

LONDON: In the end it took an anti-globalisation protester, rather than her political opponents, to knock off the `head' of the Iron Lady but even he admitted that he might not have done if he knew it would create such a furore. An obscure theatre producer from West London hit the headlines after he `beheaded' a brand new marble statue of the former British Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher, at London's Guildhall Art Gallery where it was put on display recently while plans were being finalised to move it to the Commons to be placed alongside those of Winston Churchill. Thirty-seven-year old Paul Kelleher, who decapitated the eight-feet high statue by hitting it with a cricket bat, said he was protesting against global capitalism but didn't realise the `stunt' was going to get so much publicity. He was caught before he could do more damage to the £ 50,000 sculpture which was unveiled only last month. Lady Thatcher herself had rather mixed feelings about her marbled look-alike complete with her famous handbag. "I think it is larger than I expected but that is the way to portray an ex-Prime Minister who was the first woman Prime Minister,'' she said when it was unveiled. ( Mrs. Thacther is seen next to the statue in this file photo.)
