Letters to the Editor
Sir, This refers to S. Ramanathan's letter, `Precedents' (June 24). The question of reinstatement of INA personnel was informally taken up by the Indian leadership with the Governor-General of India, Lord Mountbatten, and with the Commander-in-Chief, Claude Auchinlek, who not only rejected the idea but also threatened to review the British stand vis-à-vis India in case there was any reinstatement. What Jawaharlal Nehru said in defence of his decision not to reinstate them was a repetition of what was he was told by Lord Mountbatten. The case of jawans of the Sikh regiment who rebelled was one of mutiny and hence has similarity with the issue of reinstatement of INA personnel.
