Letters to the Editor
Sir, The billionth personal computer has been sold. Simple arithmetic says that there is one computer for every sixth human on earth. Yet, it is sad to notice that in India there is less than one computer for 100 people. India has to go a long way to go before information technology (IT) and its tools become widespread in use. Nearly half the population is illiterate and this has to be solved before anyone can aspire to dominate the field of IT. In a way, IT itself could remove illiteracy if properly applied. However, we find a lopsided planning with the (information) rich becoming richer and (information) poor becoming poorer.
