Letters to the Editor
Sir, I couldn't agree with the views of Neera Chandoke's article `The sweep of globalisation' (July 1) that the acceptance of globalisation has led to 26 per cent FDI in the print media. All protests and opposition now amount to straining at the gnat after having swallowed the elephant. The agendas that follow the concession must be accepted as part of the deal. Globalisation is part of an economic programme. It would be absurd to pretend that it will not affect all aspects of the lives of the people who accept it. With the pace at which changes in lifestyle and education are taking place, if the concession had not been made now the need to do this would have come from the media barons themselves. It is the logic of the system of which globalisation is a part. Terms such as globalisation and global village are loaded. Actually they are very precise concepts; the phrases are language traps to give the lesser countries a sense of well-being. They are as much business enterprises as the better understood World Bank and the IMF.
M.C. Gabriel,
