MUMBAI, FEB. 24. The urbane friendship-oriented film, Dil Chahta Hai, bagged seven awards, matching the tally of colonial India's cricket team of Lagaan, at the fourth Sansui Viewers' Choice Movie Awards 2002 held here on Saturday night.
Farhan Akhtar bagged the jury award for direction and screenplay for his debut effort, Dil Chahta Hai.
Oscar nominee, Lagaan, bagged the jury award for the best film while Ashutosh Gowatrikar was adjudged the best director in the popoular category. Gowatrikar also won the best story and best dialogue awards for Lagaan.
Kajol, for her superb performance in Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (K3G) and Sunny Deol for his power-packed acting in Gadar bagged the awards for best actress and best actor respectively.
Karan Johar's family drama, K3G, was declared the best film in popular category, in which over 10 lakh voters across the nation participated.
The jury award for best actress went to Amisha Patel for her sensitive portrayal in Gadar while Shah Rukh Khan was adjudged best actor for Asoka.
Megastar Amitabh Bachchan was conferred with the Lifetime Achievement Award by Yash Chopra. Referring to the love and affection showered by his fans, Bachchan, in his trademark baritone, said "I owe a great debt to you all, which I am not in a position to repay''. Terming his acting journey as "full of excitement, joy and happiness'', Bachchan said his success was impossible without the support from geniuses of the film industry. Showering praises on Bachchan, renowned lyricist, Javed Akhtar, said, "his immense talent, modesty, dedication and commitment'' are responsible for his towering success.
Arjun Rampal and Gracy Singh got the jury awards for best debut for Pyar, Ishq aur Mohabbat and Lagaan respectively. Child artiste, Suraj got the best acting award for Asoka.
Bollywood action hero, Akshay Kumar, got the award for best actor in a villianous role for Ajnabee and Saif Ali Khan bagged the award for his comic role in Dil Chahta Hai.
Akshay Khanna and Jaya Bachchan received awards for best supporting roles for Dil Chahta Hai and K3G respectively.
Shankar-Ehsan-Loy bagged the best music director's award for Dil Chahta Hai. Udit Narayan and Asha Bhosle won awards for best playback singing for Lagaan.
The other award winners were: action - Shyam Kaushal (Asoka), choreography - Farah Khan (Dil Chahta Hai), lyrics - Javed Akhtar (Dil Chahta Hai), cinematography - Kiran Deohans (K3G). _ PTI
