By Our Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI, DEC. 11. The Union Health Ministry has set up a special committee to ensure strict compliance of the directions of the Supreme Court with regard to the implementation of the Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (Regulation and Prevention of Misuse) Act, the legislation relating to prevention of female foeticide.
The panel includes Mr. Kishen Mahajan, Central Government Counsel, Ms. Neena Puri, president, Family Planning Association of India, and Dr. Sabu George, Consultant with the UNICEF.
It would visit the vulnerable States and districts regularly and ensure that the various provisions of the PNDT Act are implemented properly. Among other things, it would monitor the registration of genetic clinics, counselling centres and laboratories that used ultrasound machines, which were capable of detecting the sex of the foetus. It would also follow up on prosecutions launched against those flouting the rules.
