Enjoy your work, swami tells politicians, bureaucrats
By Our Special Correspondent
HYDERABAD, DEC. 11. Swami Dayananda Saraswathi, founder of the All India Movement (AIM) for Seva, has advised political leaders and bureaucrats to learn to love the work they are enjoined upon to do in service of people.
Delivering a talk on ``Enjoy Your Work'' organised by the Dr. MCR Human Resource Development Institute on Monday, the Swamiji called for a change of attitude on the part of politicians and administrators to be able to deliver a better service to people.
The Chief Minister, Mr. N. Chandrababu Naidu, his Ministerial colleagues, the Chief Secretary, Mr. P.V. Rao, and the top bureaucrats of the State, heard the 90-minute address of the Swamiji attentively as he dwelt on the richness of India's cultural heritage and spiritualism which provided answers to every conceivable problem.
Swami Dayananda Saraswathi contended that the one billion population that India accounted for was not a liability but could well be turned into an asset. ``We always think of one billion stomachs to fill and not two billion hands and legs which could be put to productive purposes,'' he said adding that it was not difficult to create structures for providing work to the huge population.
The Swamiji said one's desires needed to be managed within the purview of Dharma (universal order). ``You don't have a chance to do what you always like to do. Therefore you have to love and enjoy to do what you have been asked to do,'' he counselled.
Swami Dayananda Saraswathi said every religious tradition had something special but compassion did not carry the stamp of any particular religion.
Pointing out that wrong thinking by leaders could lead to disasters, he said,``Afghanistan is being pounded on all sides because of the wrong thinking of a couple of leaders of the country.''
The Swamji said Andhra Pradesh could take the lead in new work culture. Mr. Naidu was a dynamic Chief Minister. ``America may be a rich country boasting of many places of interest. But India's culture is rich. Indian cultural heritage is the real software that has to cross the borders. Education and infrastructure for healthy surroundings could transform the Indian villages,'' he observed.
The Chief Minister said the Swamji's preachings were useful in enforcing some healthy practices in the administration. Poverty in India was the creation of the leaders, he said and pointed out the progress made by China, Singapore, Malaysia and Japan which started the development process around the same time.
Mr. P.V.R.K. Prasad, Director-General of the Institute, welcomed. Mr. R. Govind Hari, Secretary of the AIM Seva, spoke about the objectives of the Seva. Mr. A. Chengappa, additional director-general of the institute, proposed a vote of thanks.
