Mayoral candidates can spend up to Rs. 10 lakhs
By Our Staff Reporter
HYDERABAD, DEC. 11. The maximum election expenditure for those contesting Mayor post has been fixed at Rs. 10 lakhs. Similarly, the ceiling on poll expenditure for candidates joining the fray for the 100 divisions of the MCH has been put at Rs. 20,000.
According to MCH officials, Mayoral aspirants and contestants to a ward will be allowed to spend Rs. 7.50 lakhs and Rs. 12,000 more respectively in the coming polls when compared to 1995. The Election Commission guidelines, enforced till 1995, restricted the amount to Rs. 2.50 lakhs for Mayor post and Rs. 20,000 for those contesting municipal divisions.
Meanwhile, the MCH has also decided to avail the services of officials from other departments to work as Returning Officers (ROs) and Assistant Returning Officers (AROs). ``A list of 100 ROs and 100 AROs, along with reserve officials, all non-MCH ones, has been identified and sent to the State Election Commission for perusal,'' MCH officials informed.
This happens to be a departure from earlier practice, as till the last elections, held in 1986, MCH officials themselves officiated as ROs and AROs. ``MCH rules allow us to appoint the returning officers from outside and we chose to avail of the option this time,'' official observed.
