Eight trees selected for `Vrikshasnehi' award

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, DEC. 11. Eight trees in the city have been selected by the green group, Friends of Trees, for this year's ``Vrikshasnehi'' award.

The old teak tree on the premises of the City Police Commissioner's Office is one of the trees that have been selected for the award. This tree has a circumference of 253 cms. A tree that has been spared the axe during the Vellayambalam-Thycaud road widening scheme - the Ziziphus Jujuba (Elantha) - has also found its place in the list of trees being honoured this year by the Friends of Trees. Having a circumference of 290 cms, this tree stands just adjacent to the office of the Director of Survey and Land Records.

The tree-filled premises of the Trivandrum Club too has been considered by the environmental group for the award, with the `Vallabham' tree (Carallia Brachiata), with a circumference of 477 cms, figuring in the list of this year's award winning trees. The `Vella Pine' (Vateria Indica) that has been maintained on the premises of the Free Masons Hall at Vazhuthacaud is yet another tree that has been selected for the award. This tree has a circumference of 282 cms. The Friends of Trees has also taken note of the numerous other varieties of trees that grow inside the Masons Hall compound.

In keeping with the trend over the years, this year too, a tree on the Government Women's College campus has been selected for the award instituted by the Friends of Trees. The campus has 729 trees belonging to 74 distinct varieties. This year, the `Njaval' tree (Syzygium Cimini) standing behind the English Department of the college has been selected for the award. This tree has a circumference of 247 cms.

Another campus that has attracted special attention of the Friends of Tress is the University College, which has 375 trees belonging to 78 distinct varieties. The `Mathagiri Vembu' (Toona Ciliata) tree selected for this year's award is situated by the side of the compound wall on the eastern side of the college campus and has a circumference of 324 cms.

The Friends of Trees has identified 100 varieties of trees on the campus of the All Saint's College. The total number of trees on the campus is 1,454. The tree selected for this year's award, the Vaaka (Albizia Lebbeck) with a circumference of 95 cms, stands by the side of the pathway leading to the college hostel.

The eighth tree that has been selected for this year's award is the `Kulamavu' (Persea Macrantha), with a circumference of 316 cms. This tree stands on the premises of the residence of one Mr. N. Velayudhan Nair residing at Jagathy.

Almost all the trees that have been selected for this year's award are hundred years old. The awards will be given away at a ceremony to be held at the Women's College on December 12, by the present head of the royal family of erstwhile Travancore, Mr. Uthradom Thirunal Marthanda Varma.
