MLA for firm action against miscreants
By Our Staff Reporter

ALAPPUZHA, DEC. 11. The Alappuzha MLA, Mr. K. C. Venugopal, has called for firm action by the police and district administration against the anti-social elements who indulged in violence in Alappuzha on the days of the hartal called by the PDP on December 6, and by the BJP and the Viswa Hindu Parishad later.

Addressing a press conference here today, Mr. Venugopal expressed deep concern at the continuance of violence in the town. According to reports, the miscreants today destroyed a tea stall at Thiruvambady and burnt the car of Dr. Sreenivasan in Muppalam area.

Mr. Venugopal said that it was the responsibility of those who had called the hartal to ensure peace. He expressed the hope that the all-party meeting to be convened this evening would chart out an action plan to instill confidence among the public.

Mr. Venugopal said that the construction of the Kannan Varkey and YMCA bridges in the town had been completed. The Minister for Public Works, Dr. M. K. Muneer, will open the bridges to traffic on December 22 morning. The work of the bridges, which has been pending for a long time, was restarted at the initiative of the MLA. It is expected that the inauguration of the bridges will solve the traffic snarls in the town.

The MLA said that the Government would take steps to finish the reconstruction works of Kochukada, Kothuvalchavadi, Vazhicherry and Mattancherry bridges in the town in a phased manner. He said the reconstruction of the bridges would be completed within two years.

Mr. Venugopal said that the Tourism Minister, Prof. K. V. Thomas, would lay the foundation stone of a permanent pavilion at the finishing point of the Nehru Trophy Boat Race on December 17. The construction work would be completed before the next boat race, the MLA said. The State Government had allotted a sum of Rs. 43 lakhs for the renewal of roads leading to the boat race venue.

The Tourism Minister will inaugurate the construction work of roads. Of the total fund sanctioned, Rs. 33 lakhs will be

spent for the renewal of the road from the district court junction to the finishing point, Rs. 7.5 lakhs on renewal work of the Tathampally-Kizhakkekurishady-Punnamada road and Rs 2.5 lakhs will be spent for renewal of the Kidangamparambu-Nehru Trophy finishing point road.
