Sait seeks judicial probe
By Our Staff Reporter
KOCHI, DEC. 11 The Indian National League president, Mr. Ibrahim Sulaiman Sait, has urged the Chief Minister to order a judicial inquiry, headed by a High Court judge, into the recent communal riots.
#Only a judicial probe would be able to bring out the plot behind the riots, he told mediapersons here on Tuesday. He said it was most unfortunate that the violent incidents took place at a time when both Hindus (Sabarimala season) and Muslims (Ramadan) were in a fasting season. He urged the Government, the political leaders and the media to act in a responsible way to check the spread of violence.
#Mr. Sait blamed the "fascist communal forces of the Sangh Parivar" for the widespread violence. He alleged that the Sangh Parivar had conspired to destroy the secular traditions of Kerala as it had failed to win a single seat in the last Assembly election. He linked the violence to the recent visits to Kerala by the RSS chief, Mr. K.S. Sudarsan, and the provocative statements issued by the Union Minister of State for Railways, Mr. O. Rajagopal. He regretted that a senior leader like Mr. Rajagopal should make such inflammatory remarks.
#He noted that Kerala had until now been a "haven of communal harmony" and that the kind of recent widespread violence was unheard of in the State. Even the communal conflagration in Thalassery and Palakkad had been confined to certain areas. He alleged that the Pathanamthitta violence was a well-planned effort to discredit Muslims and shatter the morale of the young generations of the community.
#He said there was no concrete evidence for the NDF's role in the Pathanamthitta violence. To his knowledge, it was the pasting of the Sangh Parivar's `victory posters' on the PDP posters calling for rebuilding of the Babri Masjid that had triggered the violence.
#He alleged that the police had acted with bias in Pathanamthitta and that they were indiscriminately arresting innocent Muslims, instead of the Sangh Parivar activists. It was the shops and vehicles of Muslims that had been burned, he said.
