Hartal supporters must be charged for murder bid: CPI
By Our Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, DEC. 11. The CPI State secretary, Mr. Veliyam Bhargavan, has asked the State Government to charge a case for attempted murder against the sponsors of Monday's hartal.

In a statement here today, Mr. Bhargavan pointed out that the hartal was marked by widespread violence and one person had died after hartal supporters pelted stones at an ambulance in Palakkad and could not be rushed to hospital on time.

Those who had attacked shops and residences should be proceeded against and must be made to compensate those who had sustained damage, the CPI leader said.

Mr. Bhargavan said the violence that was unleashed under the cover of the hartal was part of a conspiracy to foment communal passion in the State.

The scale of violence was unprecedented by recent standards. In Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Kozhikode and Kasaragod, there were also attacks on places of worship. This was deliberate and pre-planned.

The CPI leader said the motivation for the violence was clear. The BJP Government at the Centre had set a record with its anti-people policies and was getting increasingly isolated from the people.

Popular struggles against the BJP Government were also gathering momentum across the country. Under the circumstances, the Sangh Parivar was keen to divert public attention and the violence was part of this plan.

Mr. Bhargavan said the actions of the National Development Front and the PDP were creating a climate conducive for implementation of the Sangh Parivar agenda.

The attacks on pilgrims to Sabarimala were intended to fan communal hatred. The attack on Sabarimala pilgrims on Monday as well showed that neither the NDF-PDP nor the Sangh Parivar had any respect for the pilgrims or places of worship.

The Antony Government's ineptness had played a none-too-insignificant part in the violence. It was also not surprising that the Antony Government, which came to power with the support of the RSS, PDP and NDF, could not check the violence unleashed by these organisations.

All those who desired religious amity and peace in the State should come forward to foil the designs of the Sangh Parivar, Mr. Bhargavan said.
