LDF team visits Pathanamthitaa

PATHANAMTHITTA, DEC. 11. The Leader of the Opposition, Mr. V.S. Achuthanandan, said here today that he did not see anything wrong in observing a protest day on the anniversary of the demolition of the Babri Masjid, which every sane person of the country considered a shameful tragedy the independent India had ever witnessed. However, religious fundamentalists and anti-social elements taking law into their hands and unleashing terror in the name of the masjid should be condemend, he said.

#Mr. Achuthanandan, who led a LDF team to the violence-hit areas of the district today, was addressing a press conference at the Tourism Guest House.

#He said it was a dangerous trend that religious fundamentalists were trying to divide society on communal lines. The Chief Minister should take immediate steps to contain the spread of religious terrorism in the State, he said.

#In a scathing attack on the Union Minister, O. Rajagopal, the LDF leader alleged that he was talking like an RSS worker, sidelining his responsibilities as a Minister. IT was strange that Mr. Rajagopal never condemned the violence unleashed by the BJP-RSS workers, he said.

#Mr. Achuthanandan said the Chief Minister should learn lessons from the communal violence that rocked Vizhinjam and Poonthura in the past and take stern action against those who incite violence without any political consideration.

#He alleged that the official neglect in ensuring adequate protection to the life and property of the people had cost two lives and property worth crores of rupees in the State during the past three days. The Chief Minister's promise to check violence remained on paper, he said.

#He claimed that the State had not witnessed any communal violence during the previous LDF Government's rule and so was the case in the Left-ruled West Bengal over the past 25 years.

#Dr. Neelalohithadasan Nadar, Janata Dal; Dr. K.C. Joseph, Kerala Congress(Joseph); Mr. K.P. Rajendran, CPI; Mr. Aziz, RSP, and Mr. Saseendran, NCP, were the other LDF leaders who accompanied the Leader of the Opposition.

#The LDF team also visited the BJP office which was reduced to ashes in the arson and the Vettoor mosque where the `hundi' was attacked by unidentified miscreants on Monday night.

#The team felt that the Chief Minister should have visited the affected areas and heard the grievances of the victims in person.

The LDF team led by the Leader of the Opposition, Mr. V.S. Achuthanandan, visiting the violence hit areas in Pathanamthitta on Tuesday.
