No move to privatise KSEB, says Minister

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, DEC. 11. The Electricity Minister, Mr. Kadavoor Sivadasan, reiterated on Tuesday that there was no plans to privatise the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB).
However, private participation would be allowed in infrastructure development, including power development, the Minister told a press conference here.
As to the MoU with the Centre on power sector reforms, the Government had two options. Either, the board could be restructured into separate corporations or divided into profit centres under the same umbrella organisation.
Mr. Sivadasan said that though the Government had offered to provide power to Karnataka from the Kayamkulam Thermal Project at actual costs, Karnataka had not yet responded to the offer.
Conservation Awards
The Minister also announced the Energy Conservation and Commendation Certificates 2001 for achievements in energy conservation during 2000-2001.
The Energy Conservation Award for large industries went to Hindustan Newsprint, Kottayam which made a savings of Rs. 239 lakhs through various conservation measures.
The Hindustan Latex Limited (HLL), Thiruvananthapuram, and Kerala Minerals and Metals, Kollam, won the commendation certificates.
The HLL's unit at Akkulam in Thiruvananthapuram got the commendation certificate for Medium industries.
The Foster Foods Limited Thrissur was chosen the winner among small industries.
The Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre, Valiamala, Thiruvananthapuram, won the Commendation Certificate for building complex.
Ms. Mary Sebastian of Kottayam won a cash award for organising energy conservation programmes, mobilising around 6,000 women during the last three years. The Energy Conservation Society, Kollam won the Commendation Certificate in the category of NGOs and individuals.
The chief reporter of `Mathrubhumi' in Kochi, Mr. S. Prakash, won the Commendation Certificate for mediapersons, publishers and writers.
