KPCC chief, Minister protecting culprits: BJP
By Our Staff Reporter
PATHANAMTHITTA, DEC. 11. The BJP leader, Mr. K. Raman Pillai, has alleged that the KPCC president, Mr. K. Muraleedharan, and the Cultural Affairs Minister, Mr. G. Karthikeyan, were trying to protect the culprits behind the recent violence in Pathanamthitta.
Addressing a press conference here today, Mr. Raman Pillai, accompanied by the party district president, Mr. V. N. Unni, and the secretary, Mr. A. G. Unnikrishnan, alleged that Mr. Muraleedharan's criticism against the Union Minister, Mr. O. Rajagopal, following the arson ``masterminded by the National Development Front (NDF)'' in Pathanamthitta hinted at the close ``nexus'' between the KPCC chief and the Muslim extremist groups.
The BJP leaders alleged that the KPCC secretary, Ms. Ajeeba M. Sahib, who is also the Pathanamthitta municipal chairperson, the two Congress municipal councillors, Mr. A. Shamsuddin and Mr. Sharafuddin, were protecting the miscreants who had unleashed terror in Pathanamthitta on December 7 night.
Mr. Unni alleged that all the three Congress leaders were staunch Karunakaran loyalists and Mr. Muraleedharan's ``unchaste reaction'' against the Union Minister was aimed at protecting them.
Mr. Unni alleged that the three Congress leaders had made political intervention for the release of many NDF-PDP activists involved in the arson and violence who were taken into custody by the police.
He alleged that Mr. Sharafuddin, who was taken into custody by the Dy.SP, Mr. R.Ramachndran Nair, for attacking a group of Sabarimala pilgrims on December 7 night, was released later, following the intervention of the Congress leaders.
The BJP leaders demanded the arrest of the three Congress leaders saying that ``protecting the criminals and abetting a crime were also criminal offences.''
They also demanded the resignation of the three people's representatives from their respective posts owning moral responsibility for the violent incidents.
The BJP sought the KPCC's clarification on its secretary's alleged connections with Muslim extremists.
Mr. Unni said the BJP would launch a mass movement against the municipal chairperson and the other two Congress councillors, if the Government failed to take action against them.
Mr. Raman Pillai urged the Chief Minister, Mr. A. K. Antony, to visit the violence-hit areas of Pathanamthitta and take immediate steps to nab the culprits and give compensation to the victims.
He alleged that it was not at all befitting for the Chief Minister to issue ambiguous statements on the arson and violence in Pathanamthitta.
Mr. Antony should visit the affected areas, convene a peace meet, taking into confidence of all sections of society, Mr. Pillai added.
He said the Government should take the release of a few culprits from police custody at the instance of certain Congress leaders in all its seriousness because it gave an alarming message of a conspiracy involving the police, the NDF and a few Congress leaders, he alleged.
