Adalats ensure faster justice: CJ
By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI, DEC. 11. Lok Adalats ensure faster and final justice not only for cases pending before various courts of judicature, but also before all statutory authorities, said the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court, Mr. B. Subhashan Reddy.

Speaking at a short seminar on settlement of bank cases through Lok Adalats organised by the Tamil Nadu Legal Services Authority (TNSLSA), Mr. Justice Reddy said ``everything under the sun, except criminal cases, can be settled at Lok Adalats''.

Over 10 lakh cases are pending in subordinate courts in the State, and more than 3 lakh cases are pending in the High Court, he said, adding that more number of Lok Adalats was the only pragmatic answer. ``All cases pending before any statutory authority should be brought to Lok Adalats for expeditious disposal'', he said.

Mr. Justice V.S. Sirpurkar appealed to bankers to ensure the success of exclusive Lok Adalats for banks. He also wanted the participants to pay special attention to the loan- recovery drives, and also be vigilant while sanctioning loans.

Mr. Justice R. Jayasimha Babu said white collar criminals were siphoning of hundreds of crores, and blamed the lack of enforcement, manpower and regulatory mechanism for the menace.

The Principal Sessions Judge, Mr. S. Ashok Kumar, said 45 Lok Adalats were held in Chennai between September 2000 and November 2001, where 728 cases involving Rs. 7.9 crores settled.

Among others who spoke on the occasion were the member-secretary of the Authority, Mr. J.A.K. Sampathkumar, and the presiding officer of the Debts Recovery Tribunal-I, Mr. S. P. Chaturvedi.
