AIFB plans Assembly motion to raise Periyar Dam level
By Our Special Correspondent

MADURAI, DEC. 11. The All-India Forward Bloc plans to introduce in the next session of the Assembly a motion demanding the passing of a unanimous resolution for raising the storage level of the Periyar dam from 136 to 145 feet, as recommended by the Central Water Commission.

Talking to newsmen here today, Mr. L. Santhanam, general secretary of the State Committee, mooted the formation of an all-party team comprising MLAs from southern districts, to inspect the dam and submit a report to the Government as Kerala had done recently. The Assembly could proceed with the resolution on the basis of the report submitted by the team.

On the political ties, Mr. Santhanam said since a realignment in the State had not been confirmed, the AIFB would continue to support the AIADMK as the leader of the `secular alliance'. In a resolution passed at its State conference which concluded at Chekkanoorani near here on Monday, the AIFB decided to support the AIADMK general secretary, Ms. Jayalalithaa, in the Andipatti by-election.

The conference called for a reconsideration of the revision of prices of essential commodities and insisted that farmers should be not asked to pay for farm power. Water scarcity hit all farmers, irrespective of the extent of their land holdings.

Another resolution condemned the police action on Chennai law students and demanded withdrawal of cases registered against them. The conference also called for withdrawal of the Prevention of Terrorism Ordinance and urged the Government to renovate the Periyar Centre which had been demolished in New Delhi recently.

The 14th party congress would be held in Lucknow from December 27 to 30.

The following were elected office-bearers of the State committee: Messrs T. S. Paramasivam Pillai (president), K. Thanikodi Thevar (vice-president), Santhanam (general secretary), M. Durairajan (treasurer) and P. Santhana Thevar, K. P. Ganapathi and Ganapathy (secretaries).
