Don't dig your own grave, Nallakannu warns AIADMK
By V. Ganapathy
TIRUCHI, DEC. 11. Senior CPI leaders last night indicated that the party was distancing itself from the AIADMK, which was following ``anti-people and anti-secular front policies''.
Speaking at the concluding session of the 15th State conference of the AITUC here, Mr. R. Nallakannu, State general secretary of the CPI, went to the extent of warning the AIADMK not to ``dig its own grave'' by discarding the interests of lakhs of voters who had given the party a big mandate in the Assembly election.
The AIADMK seemed to have forgotten its election promise that it would go all-out to mitigate the sufferings of the common man. The series of price hikes and tariff revisions, announced recently by the Government, without consulting the AIADMK's alliance partners, affected all sections, especially the poor.
The Government could easily raise funds without taxing the poor, if only it had the political will. Large industrial undertakings were not taken to task for non-payment of taxes and power charges. Instead, the poor farmer and the daily wage earner were fleeced, the CPI leader charged.
During the Assembly election the CPI supported the AIADMK which was then against the ``fundamentalist BJP''. But now the AIADMK seemed to move towards the BJP, with its decision to support the ``draconian'' Prevention of Terrorism Ordinance brought in by the Union Government.
The police unleashed a lathicharge on students in the Chennai law college hostel, whereas goondas and hirelings were moving about freely in the city and many other parts of the State. The CPI would not remain a silent spectator when the Government unleashed violence on students, the working class and innocent people and followed anti-people policies, Mr. Nallakannu said.
Mr. Gurudas Dasgupta, former MP and national vice- president of the AITUC criticised the AIADMK Government for the ``anti-labour and repressive policies'' it pursued during the recent transport strike.
Mr. A. M. Gopu, AITUC president; Mr. R. Mahadevan, assistant secretary, and Mr. Subbarayan, former MLA, spoke.
