DVAC raids illegal, Natarajan tells court
By Our Special Correspondent
CHENNAI, DEC. 11. Mr. M. Natarajan, husband of Ms. Sasikalaa, has said the DVAC search of his house and office premises in 1996 in connection with the `disproportionate wealth case' against the former Chief Minister, Ms.Jayalalithaa, was illegal.
In a petition, filed on his behalf by counsel, Mr. R. Jayaseelan, seeking the return of a modem seized by the police, Mr. Natarajan submitted that Mr. V. C. Perumal, then Inspector-General of Police and Mr. Nallamma Naidu, then Superintendent of police, Directorate of Vigilance and Anti- Corruption, conducted raids on his office and his residential premises at Besant Nagar here and Thanjavur.
The police seized several documents and materials. But no incriminating document or cash was seized. Some materials like bullets were seized but not listed and produced before court. The searches were ``politically motivated, illegal and an abuse of power'' by the police.
Mr. Natarajan said he was not an accused. Nor he a public servant. He referred to the seizure of a revolver and the steps he took to get it back. He was being unnecessarily harassed by the DVAC. The seizure of documents and materials which were required for him had put him to hardship. When he was not cited as an accused, the property should have been returned.
The petitioner said the modem was in now way connected with the case and it should be returned. Mr. Arumugaperumal Adityan, Special Judge-I, has sent for the property from the city civil court, in whose custody it is, and posted the matter for December 13.
