Massive drinking water scheme for Madurai, Theni

MADURAI, DEC. 11. The State Government has sanctioned a massive drinking water supply scheme for Madurai and Theni districts.
The Rs. 95-crore scheme, for which approval was given on Monday, envisages supply of drinking water to Sedapatti, T. Kallupatti, Usilampatti, Andipatti, Ezhumalai and Perayur in the two districts.
The scheme is targetted at 4.32 lakh people living in 30 habitations in Andipatti panchayat union, 78 in Usilampatti union, 127 in Sedapatti union and 113 habitations in T. Kallupatti union, besides the Andipatti, Ezhumalai, Perayur and T. Kallupatti town panchayats and the Usilampatti municipality.
The Vaigai river is to be the source for the water supply.
The Government, according to the order issued by Ms. Shantha Sheela Nair, Secretary, Municipal Administration, has decided to seek external funding for the project.
The TWAD Board has been directed to explore the possibilities of getting external funds for this `Sedapatti compound drinking water supply scheme'.
The announcement would not have attracted much attention but for the inclusion of Andipatti, from where the AIADMK general secretary, Ms. Jayalalitha, is to contest the by-election to the Assembly, in the scheme.
CM clarifies

Talking to the media at the Secretariat, the Chief Minister, Mr. O. Paneerselvam, clarified that the water supply scheme for Andipatti and neighbouring areas had not been announced with an eye on the byelection to Andipatti.
The scheme was announced by Ms. Jayalalithaa herself during the budget session in August, he said.
