It's Karthik Urs' day
By Our Sports Reporter
PANJIM, DEC. 11. It was a day that the young Karthik M. Urs of Karnataka will not forget in a hurry. The talented but temperamental lad seized his day with both hands with a series of upsets on the penultimate day of the 63rd Junior National table tennis championship at the Don Bosco Oratory hall here on Tuesday.
Karthik began on a promising note scalping Rajath Chopra of Delhi in straight games at 11-9, 11-9, 11-3 before accounting for the `dark horse' of the championship, A. Amalraj of PSCB 11-2, 13-11, 12-10.
The inform A. Rajath Kamal of Tamil Nadu, not the one to give in easily, met his match in the Karnataka lad, who survived some anxious moments enroute to a pre-quarterfinal win at 11-6, 4-11, 7-11, 11-6, 11-8, 9-11, 11-8.
Karthik however did not seem to have finished for the day, in the quarterfinals Karthik accounted for another giant- killer - Aniket Koparkar of Maharashtra - who had earlier in the day toppled third seed Shubadeep Dasgupta of Bengal. Aniket who won 9-11, 11-8, 5-11, 11-7, 6-11, 15-13, 11-8 could not do much against the Karnataka's no. two paddler who won easily at 11-3, 11-3, 11-5, 11-6 to make the last four grade.
Ankur Mahajan is one name that sure is going to make headlines. The lanky Maharashtra lad possess good game sense and attacking instincts which he more often covers of for his suspect backhand defence. On this day however the Kamlesh Mehta trained-lad, used talent and temperament in good measure to outwit second seed Soumyajit Sarkar of Bengal in the quarterfinals at 9-11, 11- 6, 5-11, 12-10, 11-1, 11-6.
The girls section too evinced keen interest though the top three seeds took their appointed place in the semis.
