Panel to identify likely demand of professionals
By P. Vikram Reddy
HYDERABAD, DEC. 11. A 25-member high level strategic group headed by the Planning Commission member Mr. N. K. Singh, is expected to come out with a `blueprint' in six months, setting out the requirement of Indian professionals to meet the growing demand from the West and other developed countries.
The strategic group set up at the initiative of the All India Management Association (AIMA), met for the first time in Delhi on December 4. The objective of the exercise is to identify ``likely demand for professionals by the developed world, skill set-wise and country-wise,'' estimate present Indian capacities, and future requirements, according to Maj Gen (Retd) D. N. Khurana, Director General, AIMA.
Speaking to The Hindu here on Tuesday, Maj Gen Khurana said India was estimated to now have about 5.3 million professionals _ doctors, engineers, teachers, and software professionals _ and demand in the immediate future was expected to be of the order of another one million.
The strategic group's task will be to arrive at a figure and estimates in a professional manner, identify gaps in institutional and infrastructure facilities such as telecommunications, schools and also finances required for the effort to generate an additional one million professionals. The report would then be submitted to the Union Government for follow up action. The Chinese factor lent an urgency to address this issue, he said pointing out that China was aware of these facts and had even made known its intention to have every Chinese learn English within eight years.
The 25-member group consists of representatives from a cross section of the industry like Godrej, Crompton and Greaves, directors of IIM and IIT, Mr. Tarun Das (CII), and Mr. Arun Maira, the country head of the Boston Consultancy Group (BCG).
