Rajnikant bags best actor award

CHENNAI, DEC. 21. Rajnikant has been chosen best actor for 1999 by the State Government, for his exploits in the film `Padayappa'. The movie has bagged the Best Film award too and was chosen by a panel from 39 entries. The movie also got Ramya Krishnan the special prize for best actress, Srinivas, best male playback singer and Sundaramurthy, the best make-up artist. The Chief Minister, Mr. M. Karunanidhi, announced this in a press release here this evening. The awards will be given away at a function at Valluvar Kottam on January 12.

In the category of special awardees are Kamal Hasan (Nadigar Tilagam Sivaji prize), J. Mahendran (Aringnar Anna prize), Kaka Radhakrishnan (Kalaivanar prize), Shankar (Raja Santo prize), Vijay (MGR prize), Kamakotiyan (Kavignar Kannadasan prize) and S.S. Rajendran (Theagaraja Bhagavathar prize).

Bala, director of `Sethu', has been chosen Best Director; Sivaram Gandhi, best dialogue writer; G. Ravi, best sound recordist, Krishnamurthy, best art director, Thalapathi Ganesh, best stunt director, R. Lawrence, best dance director and Renuka Vasanth, best costumes. Rajkumaran gets selected as best script writer while A.R. Rehman has been chosen best music director. Ilavarasu is best cinematographer, Vairamuthu is best lyricist, S. Janaki best female play back singer, Master Vicky is best child artist and Sai Suresh, best editor.

`Thullada Manamum Thullum' has been chosen the second best film while `Edirum Pudhirum' came third. `Sethu' bags a `best film special award' while `Ananda Poongatre' gets a special award for the movie with the theme of women's development.

Simran has been chosen best actress for her performance in `Thullada Manamum Thullum;' Vikram gets a best actor special prize for his lead-role in `Sethu' while Raghuvaran has been selected as the best villain for his roles in `Mudhalvan' and `Iranyan'. Vivek has been chosen as best comedian.
