dated December 14, 1950: Cease-fire plan for Korea
At Lake Success, the United Nations General Assembly Political
Committee, against Soviet objections voted on December 12 to give
urgent consideration to the 13-nation plan for bringing about a
cease-fire in Korea.
Priority was given at the request of B. N. Rau, the Indian
delegate, who was the main author of the plan. Earlier Mr. Rau
had told the Committee that the Chinese People's Republic
representative had assured him that it did not war but war was
thrust upon it by the United States and United Nations.
Attlee meets Churchill
Mr. Winston Churchill, Conservative leader, had a private talk
with Prime Minister, Mr. Attlee in London Parliament on December
12, on the Truman-Attlee meetings in Washington. Although they
did not formally consult on foreign policy, it was customary for
the Prime Minister to keep the Opposition informed on critical
aspects of external affairs. There was a general exchange of news
designed to clear the way for the on-coming debate on the
Washington talks in which the Prime Minister and the Opposition
leader would be principal speakers.
Soviet paper's charge
The Soviet organ Izvestia said on December 12 in London that the
Truman-Attlee conference in Washington showed the United States
and Britain want war. An article broadcast by Radio Moscow said:
``Mr. Truman and Mr. Attlee have come to an agreement to expedite
preparations for a new world war subordinating all other
political and economic problems to this principal task of the
foreign policy of the United States and Britain.''
