AIADMK flays delay in relief works
By Our Staff Reporter
PONDICHERRY, DEC. 13. The former Chief Minister and AIADMK leader
of Pondicherry, Mr. D. Ramachandran, said here on Wednesday that
it was regrettable that the Pondicherry Administration had not
initiated measures to relieve the people of the misery caused by
the recent cyclone.Addressing newspersons here, he said he was
not able to understand why the administration should wait for the
funds from the Centre when it could disburse the relief amount
from out of the Consolidated Fund available at its disposal.
He said that on the part of the Central Government, it should
have come forward with a token allocation of funds to the
Pondicherry Government to manage the aftermath of the cyclone. He
said that for political reasons the Central Government was doing
injustice to Pondicherry. Should a Central Government wait for a
request from the State Chief Minister when it is its duty to come
to the rescue of suffering people, he asked.Mr. Ramachandran said
he had received complaints from people that distribution of rice
was being done in some Assembly constitutencies and there could
be no justification for selection of some constituencies for
distribution of rice.
He said although there should be uniformity in payment of
sugarcane price for farmers supplying to all the sugar mills, it
was a pity that only Rs. 730 had been paid for sugarcane growers
attached to Ariyur sugar mills while the cooperative mill farmers
were given a different treatment.
