Pondy Cong. hails sacking of Kannan
By Our Staff Reporter
PONDICHERRY, DEC. 13. The president of the Pondicherry Pradesh
Congress(I) committee, Mr. V. Narayanaswamy, has welcomed the
sacking of the PWD Minister, Mr. P. Kannan.
Instead of giving the allegations in writing against a Minister,
Mr. Kannan had preferred an approach that was unbecoming of a
Minister in any democratic system, he told reporters here, and
called for a thorough enquiry by the Chief Minister, Mr. P.
Shanmugham, into Mr. Kannan's charges that the Cooperation
Minister, Mr. Theni C. Jayakumar, had links with the LTTE.
Mr. Narayanaswamy said the LTTE was responsible for the killing
of former Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi, and hence whoever had a
nexus with it, should be punished.
He discounted as politically motivated the demands of the PMK,
BJP and DMK that the Shanmugham-led coalition ministry should
quit office, and wondered that none of the three parties had
criticised the behaviour of Mr. Kannan on the floor of the House,
particularly, his walkout from the House and dharna along with a
section of the Opposition. The DMK, particularly, did not have
the right to demand that the coalition ministry headed by the
Congress(I) quit because Mr. R.V. Janakiraman had headed a
government even after the TMC had stepped out of the alliance in
December last year.
Meanwhile, two PMK functionaries, Mr. M. Manjini and Mr. P.
Sankaran, had an ``informal'' meeting with Mr. Kannan at his
residence today, and later, a three-member Congress(I) team,
comprising Mr. Narayanaswamy, former Ministers, Mr. A. Gandhiraj
and Mr. Anandabaskaran, also called on Mr. Kannan, according to a
source.
