J&K Minister escapes bid on life
By Shujaat Bukhari
JAMMU, DEC. 13. Militants made an abortive bid on the life of the
Public Works Minister, Mr. Ali Mohammad Sagar, near Bijbehara
today. However, 17 persons including three police personnel were
injured in the grenade attack which hit many of his supporters.
Reports said that Mr. Sagar, the most vocal Minister in the
Farooq Abdullah Government was in Arwani village in Anantnag
district to inaugurate a re-constructed bridge. As the Minister
was boarding his bullet-proof vehicle at around 4.15 p.m.,
unidentified militants hurled a grenade amid tight security
arrangements. The grenade, however, missed the intended target
and exploded among his supporters who had gathered there to
attend a public meeting. At least 17 persons, a few of them
police personnel, received splinter injuries. But Mr. Sagar
escaped unhurt. The injured were rushed to the Anantnag hospital.
Ten of whom who were seriously wounded were shifted to Srinagar.
Police sources said that one Deputy Superintendent who was a
probationer was seriously wounded and his condition was not out
of danger. The security forces launched a search operation in the
area.
