National award instituted for classical music

BANGALORE, NOV. 25. The Sri S.V.Narayanaswamy Rao National Award Trust has instituted the Sri S.V.Narayanaswamy Rao Memorial National awards to perpetuate the memory of the late S.V.Narayanaswamy Rao, founder of the Sree Rama Seva Mandali, Chamarajpet, Bangalore, who passed away earlier this year.

The award will be mainly to promote Indian classical music and will be given to senior musicians, who may belong to either of the two styles -- Carnatic or Hindustani. Two awards will be presented each year, one to a vocalist and the other to an instrumentalist or percussionist. The selection of the awardees will be done at the national level. Each award will comprise a cash prize of Rs. 50,000, a citation and a memento. Unique contributions such as traditional scholarship, originality in rendition, innovative style, rare insights into aesthetic aspects of music, useful research, etc., will be considered while selecting an awardee.

An advisory committee comprising eminent citizens of Bangalore has been constituted to guide the mandali in its endeavour. A meeting of the committee was held recently under the chairmanship of Mr. N.Lakshman Rau. A separate panel comprising experts in classical music will select the awardees. Every year, the expert panel will be re-constituted.

The committee plans to announce the first national award on December 21, which is the birthday of the late Narayanaswamy Rao. The presentation of awards will be done during the subsequent Sree Ramanavami celebrations in March-April, 2001.
