Frames full of dreams

Young people keep dropping into his office at Nungambakkam, for the generation Y director, is scouting for fresh faces for his latest and untitled venture.

If `Idayam' touched more than a heart, `Uzhavan' launched Ramba, `Kadhal Desam' made `Mustafa Mustafa' the anthem for friendship while `Kadhalar Dinam' introduced Internet to the janta. This time around, Kathir again explores ``a different area'' in romance. The film that is slated for release only next year.

He has always taken breaks between projects. ``I always do that. I take a break for a while, look around, observe people, travel. If there is no new experience, if you have no input, then there is no output,'' Director KATHIR tells SUDHISH KAMATH on the eve of Friendship Day, purely co-incidental.

HAILING FROM a rural family, he has come a long way after he made Madras his home more than 15 years ago. The aspiring director had come to the city to study painting at the College of Arts and Crafts.

``I am a director today because I dreamt. When I came to Madras, I did not bring money. I had friends to guide me. Friendship is a wonderful relationship, there is no genuineness in any relationship without friendship. It is a wonderful feeling to have friends,'' says Kathir.

``Even love is about friendship. Like Tabu's father tells her in `Kadhal Desam', you will never know if a person who becomes your husband will make a good friend, but chances are that a good friend will make a good husband. Nobody can understand you better than a friend,'' he observes.

`Kadhal Desam' was an expression of dreams and a tribute to friendship. ``I dreamt of a beautiful place full of young people. I was inspired by our College Road. I dreamt of a women's college, huge shopping malls, a lot of trees with flowers because I love flowers. I dreamt of this setting by the beach. Since, it did not exist, I created it. It was born out of necessity,'' Kathir explains the logic behind his Rs. one crore set made for the film.

Aesthetic sense, he says is lacking among people. People are so involved with their problems, that they fail to observe life around them. ``You need to lose yourself to appreciate aesthetics. It's like falling in love. Whatever problems you may have, just look around and you will find simple things that relieve you of stress,'' is his tip.

Kathir admits he makes movies for the youth. ``Only they are like chips that are fresh, they have so much of space to accept things that are not regular. They are not loaded with conventions,'' he says.

Probably, that's why his films are to a certain extent experimental. `Idayam' was open-ended, `Uzhavan' slow and simple, `Kadhal Desam' broke the convention of the `triangle' formula while `Kadhalar Dinam' had e-mail communication as the backdrop for a stranger-falls-for- stranger love-at-first-byte tale.

`You've Got Mail' was not the inspiration, he says. ``We had finished one schedule of shooting by the time the film released here. I was inspired when I visited one of the first net-cafes in India. It was on Brigade Road, Bangalore when a friend told me he has a girlfriend whom he met through the net''.

Kathir wants people to dream. ``A dream is more beautiful than the realisation of the dream. Let us all dream. Open up our locked minds, look around and observe, appreciate, there are so many beautiful things around us. Cinema is a medium to show people these beautiful things, not to make them cry''.
