Yashpal Sharma's benefit tie today
NEW DELHI, APRIL 25. Most of the top names of Indian cricket will
converge here for the Yashpal Sharma benefit match for the
Oxemberg Cup.
The spectator response to Yashpal's benefit match would be
interesting to see. A host of former players take the field
playing under Kapil Dev (Kapil XI), quite a few them from Delhi,
including Manoj Prabhakar.
In the Sachin XI are present players, including Azharuddin and
Jadeja, who have been in the news for the past few weeks, and
also youngsters like Amit Bhandari and Murali Kartik.
Yashpal, a gutsy batsman, was a member of the team which won the
1983 World Cup. For this match, however, he had to run from
pillar to post to get it going in the prevailing atmosphere.
The benefit match for Yashpal was among a series of similar
fixtures allotted by the Board to various cricketers though the
rest were cancelled because they featured cricketers from South
Africa.
Since Yashpal had opted for a match involving past and present
Indian cricketers he was given the green signal. Yashpal's first-
class career spanned almost two decades in which he played 37
Tests and 42 one-dayers.
Yashpal, a qualified first class umpire, coaches the Uttar
Pradesh team and is also a television commentator.
