Karnataka orders brisk work at Alamatti dam
By Our Special Correspondent
BANGALORE, APRIL 25. The Karnataka Government has asked the
engineers in Upper Krishna Project (UKP) to work day and night to
put up skin plates for erection of crest gates to store 173
tmcft. of water in Almatti Dam now that the Supreme Court has
permitted raising of the height of the Dam to 519 metres.
This was stated in the Assembly today by the Chief Minister, Mr.
S. M. Krishna, who said the demand of the State was that it
should be permitted to raise the height to 524 metres while
Andhra Pradesh insisted on restricting height of the dam to 512
metres. The question of additional height for power generation
had been referred to the Tribunal for a direction within three
months.
Mr. Krishna, who was replying to the discussion on the motion of
thanks to the Governor for the address to the joint session of
the legislature referred to the several challenges in the
irrigation sector which were getting complicated and went on to
inform the House of the latest information the Government had on
the verdict of the Supreme Court.
Following a suggestion from the Janata Dal (United) leader, Mr.
P.G.R. Sindhia, that the Government call a meeting of leaders of
all the political parties, experts and lawyers before announcing
any decision, Mr. Krishna said he would convene such a meeting
shortly to take steps with the cooperation of all parties to
achieve what the Government had in mind.
