2 die of sunstroke in Orissa
By Our Staff Correspondent
BHUBANESWAR, APRIL 25. Though coastal Orissa had some pre-monsoon
showers in the past couple of days, the interior districts are
continuing to experience high temperatures.
Two persons have died of sunstroke in Mayurbhanj and Dhenkanal,
according to the Revenue Department here. But over 30 sunstroke
deaths have been reported by the local media from different parts
of the State.
Though no area has recorded a temperature of 45 degrees Celsius
for two days or more, the condition described as a heat wave,
most of western Orissa districts are experiencing maximum
temperatures of over 40 degrees Celsius.
The weather department officials, however, feel that the State is
unlikely to suffer a severe heat wave this year. Monsoon is
likely to start by June 8.
But the Government is not taking chances. After ordering the
closure of all schools by 11-30 a.m., the authorities have now
ordered that all schools close for summer vacation from April 29.
Voluntary organisations and other agencies have made arrangements
on the roadside to provide drinking water. Soft drink and
watermelon sellers are doing brisk business.
