Karunanidhi condemns assault on Christians
By Our Special Correspondent
CHENNAI, APRIL 25. The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Mr. M.
Karunanidhi, today condemned the incidents of assault on a
Christian group at Mathura, the burning of Biblical literature in
Agra and attack on three nuns in Haryana.
Conveying his sympathy to the affected persons on behalf of the
Tamil Nadu Government and the Tamils, Mr. Karunanidhi, said in a
statement that in a multi-lingual and multi-racial country like
India, subjecting minority communities to such ordeals,
particularly in the northern States, would disrupt communal
harmony and humanism. A Catholic priest had said the attack on
the three nuns was an accident and pleaded against giving a
political colour to it or creating a confrontation between the
minorities and Hindus. Besides arresting the persons responsible
for the assault on the Chrisitian group, the U.P. Chief Minister
had also ordered a detailed inquiry into the incident.
Apart from taking precautionary steps to prevent recurrence of
such incidents, people should remember that it was everyone's
duty to afford due protection to minorities and extend help.
